Hi, I'm Taylor Nakakihara!

Craft Club started after I posted a reel about how any bar can be a craft bar if you bring your own craft and don’t care what anybody thinks you’re doing.

Apparently, people yearn to craft!

So I reached out to one of my favorite local spots, picked a date, told the internet to bring a craft, and Craft Club became a real thing.

Now, it’s a free monthly Phoenix craft meetup where people can bring whatever they’re working on and spend a couple hours making things while hanging out with other members of their community. It is not a class, workshop, or formal event. There is no instructor, no required project, and no expectation that you already know what you’re doing.

The main idea is simple: bring a craft, grab a seat, and spend time around other people who also wanted to leave the house and make something.

Meet your host, Taylor!

FAQ's

What is Craft Club, and when/where does it happen?

Craft Club is a free monthly bring-your-own-craft meetup in Downtown Phoenix. You bring your own craft, work on whatever you want, and hang out with other creative people for a couple hours.

Craft Club meets on the second Wednesday of every month from 7–9 PM (summer hours) at The Churchill in Downtown Phoenix.

The Churchill is one of my favorite bars in Downtown Phoenix. It’s casual, community-oriented, and has something for almost everybody. It’s also the kind of place where bringing a craft to a table feels surprisingly natural, which is exactly the point.

Do I need to RSVP, check in, or pay to attend?

No RSVP is currently required unless a specific event says otherwise!

Craft Club is free to attend. You do not have to buy food or drinks to participate, but The Churchill has several food and drink options available if you want them - vegan, gluten-free, and non-alcoholic options are available too!

That said, The Churchill is generously providing the shared space we gather in, so grabbing a drink, snack, or dinner when you’re able is a great way to support the venue that makes Craft Club possible.

When you arrive, you’ll want to check in, especially if local treat giveaways are happening. To keep giveaways fair, you must be checked in and present to win.

What kind of craft should I bring?

Bring anything portable that you can comfortably carry in and out of The Churchill.

A few Craft Club-friendly ideas include: Crochet, Knitting, Embroidery and cross-stitch, Beading, Friendship bracelets, Hand sewing or mending, Journaling, Sketching, Coloring, Collage, Scrapbooking, Small painting projects, Bedazzling, A half-finished project you keep meaning to touch again, A craft kit you bought during a burst of optimism and never opened. You get it.

If it fits at a table, doesn't take over the entire space, and can be cleaned up easily, it's probably a good Craft Club project!

Craft Club is not a class or workshop. There is no formal instruction, required project, or supply list. It is a casual meetup where everyone brings their own craft and works on their own thing.

You also do not need to be good at crafting. Craft Club is not a talent show. You do not need to be good, impressive, experienced, or aesthetic. You just need to bring something you want to work on.

Please skip anything with strong fumes, wet messes, resin, lots of loose glitter, open flames, loud tools, large equipment, or projects that need a ton of table space. Craft Club happens in a shared public venue, so the goal is to bring something fun without making the space harder for everyone else to use.

Can I come alone, bring a friend, or bring kids?

Yes. You can absolutely come alone, and you can be as social as you want to be. Some people come ready to make friends, some people come to quietly work on their project, and some people do a little of both.

You can also bring a friend, bring two, bring three - the more the merrier, as long as everyone is respectful of the shared space.

Craft Club is open to kind, respectful, creative people who understand the vibe. It may be very girl-coded because that is who has been most excited about it so far, but it is not a women-only event unless a specific future meetup says otherwise.

Craft Club is generally designed as an adult social meetup, not a kids’ event. Because we meet in a public venue where alcoholic drinks are available, I do not recommend bringing anyone under 18. The Churchill also has its own rules around minors, and when they are allowed on-site, so please check their current policy directly if that impacts your plans.

What else should I know before I come?

Craft Club runs from 7–9 PM, but you can come when you can and leave when you need to. If you want more time to settle in or want the best chance at seating, arriving closer to 7 is a good idea.

Craft Club happens in a shared public venue, so seating is first come, first served. Please be mindful of making room at the table when you can, especially as more people arrive.

You are welcome to take photos or videos of your own craft. Please be thoughtful about filming or photographing other people, especially strangers. Ask before you post someone else’s face, project, or conversation.

Craft Club is primarily a community meetup, not a vendor market or networking event. Please do not come with the goal of pitching, selling, or turning the room into an audience. If future vendor, sponsor, or collaboration opportunities become available, they’ll be shared separately.

You do not have to be the most social person in the room. You do not have to be the best crafter. Just bring your own supplies, keep your project portable and low-mess, be kind to people who are showing up alone, support The Churchill if you’re able, and let people participate in the way that feels comfortable for them.

Future Craft Club dates and important info will be shared on Instagram and TikTok, and sent through the Craft Club email list!

I want to start a Craft Club in my city, where should I start?

One of the coolest parts of sharing Craft Club online has been hearing from people in other cities who want to start something similar.

If you’ve been thinking about starting a craft night where you live, let this be your sign that it does not have to be complicated.

Pick a welcoming venue (bars that already host free events are the best!), choose a date, make the ask simple, and invite people to bring whatever they’re already working on. Adding the check in function is my way of making this worth the amount of time and effort I’ve put into it - building a community of my own email subscribers and followers is my payment.

I’m working on sharing more about how I started Craft Club, what I’ve learned so far, and how other people can bring their own version of it to life.

Bring your own craft. Come alone or bring a friend. Stay the whole time or pop in when you can.

I’d love to have you with us at the next one.
